What is an IP Address?


No doubt you've heard the term "IP address." Unless you're a techie, though, you may not have more than a shadowy notion of what an IP address actually is or how it works. Let's explore the concept.
An IP address is a fascinating product of modern computer technology designed to allow one computer (or other digital device) to communicate with another via the Internet. IP addresses allow the location of literally billions of digital devices that are connected to the Internet to be pinpointed and differentiated from other devices. In the same sense that someone needs your mailing address to send you a letter, a remote computer needs your IP address to communicate with your computer.
"IP" stands for Internet Protocol, so an IP address is an Internet Protocol address. What does that mean? An Internet Protocol is a set of rules that govern Internet activity and facilitate completion of a variety of actions on the World Wide Web. Therefore an Internet Protocol address is part of the systematically laid out interconnected grid that governs online communication by identifying both initiating devices and various Internet destinations, thereby making two-way communication possible.
An IP address consists of four numbers, each of which contains one to three digits, with a single dot (.) separating each number or set of digits. Each of the four numbers can range from 0 to 255. Here's an example of what an IP address might look like: 78.125.0.209. This innocuous-looking group of four numbers is the key that empowers you and me to send and retrieve data over our Internet connections, ensuring that our messages, as well as our requests for data and the data we've requested, will reach their correct Internet destinations. Without this numeric protocol, sending and receiving data over the World Wide Web would be impossible.
IP addresses can be either static or dynamic. Static IP addresses never change. They serve as a permanent Internet address and provide a simple and reliable way for remote computers to contact you. Static IP addresses reveal such information as the continent, country, region, and city in which a computer is located; the ISP (Internet Service Provider) that services that particular computer; and such technical information as the precise latitude and longitude of the country, as well as the locale, of the computer. Many websites provide IP address look-up services to their visitors, free of charge. If you're curious about your own IP address, you can locate these websites by performing a Google search.
Dynamic IP addresses are temporary and are assigned each time a computer accesses the Internet. They are, in effect, borrowed from a pool of IP addresses that are shared among various computers. Since a limited number of static IP addresses are available, many ISPs reserve a portion of their assigned addresses for sharing among their subscribers in this way. This lowers costs and allows them to service far more subscribers than they otherwise could.
Static IP addresses are generally preferable for such uses as VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), online gaming, or any other purpose where users need to make it easy for other computers to locate and connect to them. Easy access can also be facilitated when using a dynamic IP address through the use of a dynamic DNS service, which enables other computers to find you even though you may be using a temporary, one-time IP address. This often entails an extra charge, however, so check with your ISP.
Static IP addresses are considered somewhat less secure than dynamic IP addresses, since they are easier to track for data mining purposes. However, following safe Internet practices can help mitigate this potential problem and keep your computer secure no matter what type of IP address you use.

What is File Transfer Protocol (FTP)?


FTP, File Transfer Protocol, is a protocol through which internet users can upload files from their computers to a website or download files from a website to their PCs. Originated by Abhay Bhushan in 1971 for use in the military and scientific research network known as ARPANET, FTP has evolved into a protocol for far wider applications on the World Wide Web with numerous revisions throughout the years.
FTP is the easiest way to transfer files between computers via the internet, and utilizes TCP, transmission control protocol, and IP, internet protocol, systems to perform uploading and downloading tasks.

How It Works

TCP and IP are the two major protocols that keep the internet running smoothly. TCP manages data transfer while IP directs traffic to internet addresses. FTP is an underling of TCP and shuttles files back and forth between FTP server and FTP client. Because FTP requires that two ports be open--the server's and the client's--it facilitates the exchange of large files of information.
First, you as client make a TCP control connection to the FTP server's port 21 which will remain open during the transfer process. In response, the FTP server opens a second connection that is the data connection from the server's port 20 to your computer.
Using the standard active mode of FTP, your computer communicates the port number where it will stand by to receive information from the controller and the IP address--internet location--from which or to which you want files to be transferred.
If you are using a public--or anonymous--FTP server, you will not need proprietary sign-in information to make a file transfer, but you may be asked to enter your email address. If you are using a private FTP server, however, you must sign in with a user name and password to initiate the exchange of data.

Modes of File Transfer

Three modes of transferring data are available via FTP. The system can use a stream mode, in which it transfers files as a continuous stream from port to port with no intervention or processing of information into different formats. For example, in a transfer of data between two computers with identical operating systems, FTP does not need to modify the files.
In block mode, FTP divides the data to be transferred into blocks of information, each with a header, byte count, and data field. In the third mode of transfer, the compressed mode, FTP compresses the files by encoding them. Often these modifications of data are necessary for successful transfer because the file sender and file receiver do not have compatible data storage systems.

Passive FTP

Should your computer have firewall protection, you may have difficulties using FTP. A firewall protects your PC by preventing internet sites from initiating file transfers. You can circumvent your firewall's function by using the PASV command that reverses the FTP process, allowing your computer to initiate the transfer request.
Many corporate networks use PASV FTP as a security measure to protect their internal network from assaults of unwanted external files. Also called passive FTP, the process requires that any transfer of information from the internet or other external source must be initiated by the client or private network rather than the external source.

Further FTP Security

In response to the need for a more secure transfer process for sensitive information such as financial data, Netscape developed a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol in 1994 that it used primarily to secure HTTP--HyperText Transfer Protocol--transmissions from tampering and eavesdropping. The industry subsequently applied this security protocol to FTP transfers, developing SFTP, a file transfer protocol armored with SSL for protection from hackers.

Speeding Up Your PC


Common Causes of PC Slowdowns

  • Cluttered startup. Many programs and services automatically start every time you turn on your computer. Some of these programs, such as antivirus protection, are wanted but many are not needed at all and are unnecessarily slowing the time it takes your PC to start.
  • Corrupted registry. The registry is vital to your computer's ability to run correctly and when it becomes corrupted, overall degraded performance occurs. Inaccurate registry references frequently cause computer crashes and lock-ups, while a scattered and bloated registry wastes system memory and slows down Windows processing.
  • Fragmented memory. Memory fragmentation occurs over time as memory is allocated and released by programs. When memory becomes highly fragmented and Windows runs out of free memory, programs do not have enough memory to function properly. Programs may not open or may run slower and frequently crash.
  • Fragmented hard drives. As you create, delete, and download files, your computer cannot store data as one unit and instead will split it up and store pieces in various drive locations. A fragmented hard drive has a large amount of such scattered data and can significantly slow PC performance. Files take longer to open and programs take longer to start.

  4. Defragment memory


    Defragmenting memory reclaims and frees up valuable memory, which can have a dramatic impact on speed. Defragmenting the memory can also improve the stability of your computer as low memory is a common cause of computer crashes and lockups. System Mechanic: Navigate to the Individual Tools pane. Under the Increase Performance category, click Start next to Defragment Memory. You can run and view an analysis of your PC's current memory usage and then run the defragmentation. After a short pause (~20 seconds) as the system reallocates memory, you will see how much memory was reclaimed. ActiveCare in System Mechanic: To have System Mechanic automatically defragment the memory when it is detected as being low, enable Automatically repair low memory problems on the Automated Tasks pane.
  5. Defragment hard drives


    Defragmenting reorganizes data on the drive so that file components are stored closer to each other, enabling Windows to more quickly access and open files. Defragmenting hard drives not only boosts drive speed, but can also prevent data corruption and extend the life of the drives. System Mechanic: Navigate to the Individual Tools pane. Under the Increase Performance category, click Start next to Defragment Hard Drive. You can run and view an analysis of drive fragmentation, select specific drives, select a level of defragmentation (note that a deep defragmentation takes several hours to complete, so only choose this if you can leave your PC working overnight), and then run the defragmentation. For thorough defragmentation, the files in use by the operating system must be defragmented when the computer is restarted; see boot-time defragmentation below. System Mechanic (Boot-time Defragmentation): Navigate to the Individual Tools pane. Under the Increase Performance category, click Start next to Configure Boot-time Defragmentation. This tool defragments those "unmovable" files that must be accessed prior to Windows loading. You can schedule the defragmentation of Windows system files as well as any other files you designate; the defragmentation will run the next time you start or restart your computer. Antispyware software are programs which will block, discover or remove spyware from your computer system. Spyware are programs that fall under the catagory of malware. Malware is a term that can be used to describe a wide range of software that is written for malicious purpsoses and which can cause various types of problems to your computer system. Malware can range from spyware and adware to viruses and worms. Spyware can come in a number of forms but it is most commonly software which has been unknowningly installed on a system which tracks data about the system and users and that can even make unwanted or unknown changes to computer's settings.

Adware and Spyware

The purpose for spyware to be tracking such data can vary in nature of intent from anonymous observation software refered to as Adware to very mailicous programs such as keyloggers. These adware programs which track a system's internet visits and report it back to another computer are often installed with programs which a user has purposely installed on a system. The terms of the installment of these adware programs are often included in the terms of service of the user desired software and can be willfully rejected if the user so chooses to deny these aditional programs installation on the system. In some cases the desired software may be installed without installing the Adware programs and in some cases it is required. The more malicious version of spyware comes in the form of programs which have been included in illegally altered software to unknowingly install on a system or which have been installed by unauthorized users. This type of spyware is designed to do many things from tracking keystroke input by the user to crack passwords to recording personal information of the user such as e-mails and screen recordings. Spyware and Adware can often lead to the slowing of a system due in part to several factors.
Spyware programs can slow down your computer in many different ways. Spyware may change your Windows registry which can cause system slow down and errors among other problems. If your not sure what a registry is, it is used by Windows to find the location of a program or file. Spyware programs can also take up memory space which may cause problems computers which have a very restricted amount of secondary storage memory. Spyware may also slow a system down by taking up high speed memory or RAM as well as bogging down a system's cpu by taking processing time as well as slowing an internet connection by taking away bandwith to brodcast information. All this extra work can cause problems with your computer and ultimately shorten the life span of hardware components and your computer as a whole.
There are several signs that may indicate that spyware has been installed on your computer, here are some that may be readily noticable. These are not all of the indicators of spyware being installed on a system but some of the major problems which may arise.
  • A large number of advertisment pop-ups appear very frequently everytime you browse the web or even if a web browser has not been opened.
  • There are bookmarks, favorites, toolbars, searchbar or other components which appear on your browser which you did not install or previously set.
  • You are taken to company websites, affliate pages or pages other then your normal homepage as soon as you open your browser when you did not set your browser to do so.
  • There have been changes made to your browser or system setting that you did not make and that may not be able to be changed.
  • Your computer is generally running slower on start-up, program operation or overall.

Spyware and Adware Prevention

There are a number of programs which you may use to find spyware and adware on your system but much like a computer virus, it is much better to prevent spyware then to clean it from your system so we will get into ways to stop it first. The following is a list of tips that should help you prevent your system from falling victim to spyware.
  • When installing shareware or freeware programs always read in the terms of use policy before agreeing to them. These should warn you of any software that will be installed that contains Adware.
  • Keep your system as up to date as possible. If using Windows you can help do this by setting your computer to automatically update when available.
  • Be careful where you browse and try to stay away from suspicious sites or sites which ask for your consent or agreement to enter or access.
  • Be careful where you download files and only install software from reputable compaines and sites.
  • Make sure that you have a firewall setup to protect your computer and network.
  • Make sure that your browser security setting are configured for maximum protection and security.
  • Install an Antispyware program which can detect potential threats before they endanger your system.

Antivirus software are programs which can detect, prevent and clean up computer viruses which may attempt to infect your computer system. It will scan downloaded files as well as your entire computer system in order to detect the presense of an infection. Before getting into anymore information about antivirus programs let's first learn some basic information about computer viruses in general.
A computer virus is much like the human verison in that it's purpose is to spread from system to system, replicating itself all the while causing damage to each infected host. A computer virus can range in size and purpose but typically they are small bits of code which are hidden in or attached to other files. The word virus is often a broad term which is used to refer to things such as worms, spyware, adware, malware, trojan horses and rogue software but all these things are actually different and fall into a class of there own. The problems and damage that are caused by an infecton can be extremely varied. The infection may be as simple as a prank that will cause strange noises, pop-ups and other annoying instances to occur on your system. They may delete files and slow down your system or they could even damage your hardware or posibly destroy your entire computer system. Once on your system an infection will spread by attaching to other programs and files within your system. Viruses will often not just replicate within your system but also attempt to spread to other systems outside of the locally infected one by methods such as taking control of your email and sending out copies of itself to those in your contacts list.
There are several ways that your system may become infected. The most common way a virus is spread is thru infected attachments to email. These attachements may come in the form of pictures, videos, sound clips or just about any other type of file that can be attached to an email. Infections can also be spread through internet downloads. These could be completely legimate files or links which have been altered unknowingly to include a virus or they can come from illegal software downloaded via peer-to-peer programs or other services.
Here are some signs that may indicate that your system may have been infected.
  • The occurance of random pop-ups, noises or music.
  • Random files and icons appearing on your desktop or other places when you did not install such things.
  • Files and icons which were on your system before have disappeared without you having uninstalled or moved them.
  • A high number of unusal error messages occuring.
  • On screen text, graphics, pop-ups and dialogs become distorted or unreadable.
  • Hard disks, cd/dvd-drives or other hardware components can no longer be accessed.
  • Applications are no longer accessible with passwords when you have not changed the password.
  • Programs which worked properly before run slowly or do not run at all.
  • Your system becomes exremely slow or constantly freezes.
  • Your system crashes and reboots every few minutes or simply will no longer boot at all.
These are just some of the signs that your system may have been infected and every infection will cause different sets of problems or problems which may not be listed here.

Virus Prevention

The best way to stop a computer infection is to prevent it as this is a much less tedious task then attempting to clean up your system after it has already been infected. There are a number of steps that you can take to esure the security and prevent an infection of your system. These steps include never downloading email attachments from email accounts that you do not know. Never downloading email attachments from known email accounts that seem out of the ordinary or suspicious. Downloading files from trusted and reputable websites and other reputable sources and when at all possible using checksums to ensure a files integrity. Checksums are a form of encryption that can help show if a file has been altered from its original state and most reputable companies will post a checksum to ensure a downloaded file has not been changed or the downloaded file is the correct file. Make sure that you have good firewall in place on your network. Make sure that your system always has the most recent updates installed. You can do this in Windows 7/Vista by using the Windows Update feature. Next you will want to click Check for Updates to look for the latest updates and install them if there are any. On Windows XP you will want to run the sysdm.cpl command. Next you will want to click Automatic Updates tab and finally click the ok button. Most importantly make sure that you have a trusted antivirus program installed on your system and that it is up to date and that it is active. There are a number of good antivirus programs to choose from including Norton AntiVirus, AVG AntiVirus and McAfee AntiVirus. Which one you use may simply come down to personal preference.

What Is MAC Cloning?

MAC cloning can only be done at your router providing it has those capabilities. Most ISPs assign their IPs based on the MAC address in your equipment. If the MAC address of your router is 00-11-22-33-44-55 and you connect to your ISP, the DHCP server records your MAC and assigns an IP. If you disconnect from the ISP, you lose your IP address. The next time you connect, the DHCP server sees your MAC, looks to see if it has assigned an IP address to you before. If it has and the lease time has not expired, it will most likely give you the same IP address you had before disconnecting. Why clone a MAC address? New MAC address most likely equals new IP. What's The Difference Between A Static IP Address And A Dynamic IP Address?


A static IP is one that will never change. A dynamic IP is exactly that, dynamic. It could change frequently, or not change for more than 1 year. It really depends on how the DHCP server that’s assigns the IPs is set up.

How To Determine If Your Computer Is Being Assigned The External IP Address

For Windows 2000, XP, and 2003
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type in cmd and hit ok
4. Type ipconfig and hit enter

For Vista
1. Click Start
2. Click All Programs expand the Accessories menu
3. In the Accessories menu, Right Click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator
4. Type ipconfig hit enter

Results
If you see an IP that resembles 192.168.n.n then this is an internal IP address assigned by a router. So your router is getting your external IP address. If the IP displayed in the command prompt window matches the one shown on What Is My IP then your computer is being assigned your external IP.

Why does WIMI show a different IP address than ipconfig?

The IP address shown on the What Is My IP home page is your public IP also referred to as your external IP. If your internet connection connects straight in to your computer, then your computer is assigned the external IP address. However, if your computer connects to a router then the computer will most likely get an internal IP address like 192.168.1.100 and your router will get the external IP address. So, from your computer, if you follow the steps in our How to determine if your computer is being assigned the external IP article, you’ll be able to quickly determine your computers IP.

VMS IP Commands


As the system administrator ("SYSTEM"), one can use and maintain TCP/IP services in various ways. The below are all CLI commands, with DCL. (Note: Exclamation marks, i.e. "!", denote comments.)
To display the current configuration, the most rapid way would be by invoking the following command: $ SHOW NETWORK

With the following, detailed information is shown for the TCP/IP configuration(s) in particular:
$ SHOW NETWORK /FULL "TCP/IP"

(For one thing, it'll also list active ports in use.)

One of the most common and probably the easiest ways of setting up TCP/IP networking, is with the following utility: $ @SYS$SYSROOT:[SYSMGR]TCPIP$CONFIG.COM

So, for example: $ TCPIP IFCONFIG (...) ! whatever ! desired ! options & ! values

What Is DHCP?


Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

In simple terms, DHCP determines if your IP is static or dynamic and the length of time an IP address is assigned.
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is controlled by a DHCP server. Your router can be a DHCP server...and if you're on a home network, it most likely serves this purpose.
I know this might be confusing because the word dynamic is in the term, but just because you have DHCP enabled on your computer doesn't mean you can't be assigned a static IP. DHCP enabled on your computer simply means you're letting a DHCP server assign its IP. Having it enabled DOES NOT mean it's a DHCP server.
A true DHCP server (not your Linksys router) gives the LAN Admin a ton of control with IP assigning.
Ever print to a network printer? Ever wonder how that printer keeps its network assignment? Each network device has a MAC address. You can assign a static IP at the server to a specific MAC address. This allows the network printer to always get the same IP even after it reboots and without assigning the IP at the printer. If you print the network configuration at the printer, it will probably tell you that DHCP is enabled and no static IP is assigned. That's because the IP assignment is handled at the server.
Your ISP has a DHCP server. They can assign IPs by modem MAC addresses. When your modem comes online, it communicates to the network indicating it is looking for an IP address. The DHCP server listens to this communication and starts talking to the modem. The modem then transmits its MAC address to the DHCP server. At that point, either an IP has been reserved for the modem or one is assigned at that time. Hence cloning your MAC address to get a new IP from your ISP.
Routers and DHCP - Under the General Setup or LAN Setup tab in your router, you'll see a settings option for DHCP. You can control how many IPs are assigned or to enable/disable the DHCP server portion of the router. If you disable it, you'll have to statically assign IPs to each computer, or have a DHCP server or your network. This goes for wired and wireless. Any connection on your network has an IP address.

IP Address Management


What is IP Address Management or IPAM?

By breaking down and assigning your internal IP block into segments allows faster troubleshooting when monitoring the network and seeing an erratic IP. Because you’ve segmented the IPs out, you’ll know exactly which segment it’s coming from and can narrow down finding it faster.

Why manage IPs?

Easily track when network monitor software shows errors. If you’re logged on locally to a User’s computer and you’re mapping batch file didn’t run and you need to get a file from one of your servers you don’t have to know the server name, you can simply type \\192.168.1.x to get access to the server you’re needing the file from.
In the scenario I explain below, we’ll have 1 External IP, 5 servers ((Static) 1 handles DHCP (2k3)), 10 printers (Static), 200 wired PCs/users (DHCP).

There are several different ways to set up exact scenarios. This scenario will explain IP Address Management (IPAM) for a small network using my experience and knowledge.

For ease of use, we’re going to say that this is in a brand new facility where no IPs have been assigned and you, as the LAN Admin, have just been told your internet connection is in place and ready to use (this is where the single external IP comes from).

You already know how many devices will be connected to your network in the beginning so it’s now time to lay out a plan. Since most everyone is familiar with the 192.168.1.x IPs, I’ll stick with those. Technically, your first IP is 192.168.1.0 and your last is 192.168.1.255 which gives you 256 IPs. I don’t know of anyone that uses 192.168.1.0. Since we’re human, the first number to us is 1. To a computer, the first number is 0. I don’t think .255 is useable so really, you have 254 IPs available. Your 5 servers should get your first 5 IP addresses and assign them statically even though you can control static assignment in DHCP. You don’t want there to be any chance of these servers losing their IP addresses so you don’t want them to depend on DHCP for IP assignment.

Server_1 also happens to be your DHCP server: 192.168.1.1
Server_2: 192.168.1.2
Server_3: 192.168.1.3
Server_4: 192.168.1.4
Server_5: 192.168.1.5

You have to account for growth so leave .6 through .9 open for future servers whether they’re physical or virtual, you’ll need an IP.

You have 10 printers that will be used by multiple users. IPs in the next segment of the block can be statically assigned at the printer or via the DHCP server…your choice. Every office has a “main” printer/copier/fax. Give it 192.168.1.10. If you think far enough in advance and know that Group 1 will use printer_1 then assign printer_1 192.168.10.11, printer_2 for Group 2 would get 192.168.10.12, etc. all the way through .19. In my experience, if there’s any one piece of equipment you’ll add to your network more than any other, it’ll be a printer. Somebody in one of those groups will get tired of walking 15 feet to the printer and suck up to the boss to get their own printer. Then, people within 5 feet of that person will want to share with them so they don’t have to walk 15 feet to get their stuff either. So that printer will need to be on the network vs. just connected directly to the complainers PC and shared. Lucky you. By the way, remember at the beginning I said this was a brand new facility….hopefully, the people that ran the network drops put in 2 cables at each requested location. Otherwise, you’ll either need to run a cable or take the easy way out and install a 5 port switch. Trust me when I say leave plenty of IPs open for future printers. I would assign .10 through .29 for printers. This gives you 20 IPs for printers so you’ll have 10 IPs free after installing the initial 10 printers.

Finally, we have 200 PCs that will all be hardwired to the LAN and will each need an IP. Starting at .30 going through and including .254 gives you 225 IPs. I’d start my scope in DHCP at .40 through .254. That gives you 215 IPs for users (15 extra) and that also leaves 10 IPs open at the lower range (.30 through .39) for device growth. One thing I didn’t mention yet was managed switches. They’re going to need IP addresses. You can do those at the high end of the spectrum so they’re “out of the way”. Maybe assign them .254, .253, .252, etc. depending on how many you have.

IPAM can get pretty deep especially if you’re dealing with 100’s of PCs and devices. This is where subnetting comes in. I’ll go into further detail in another article, but just for gee whiz this is the tip of the iceberg on subnetting:

For example, 192.168.1.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 is not on the same network as 192.168.2.1/255.255.255.0 even though they both might be in the same building. However, if you change the third octet in the subnet to 0 like this 255.255.0.0 now 192.168.1.1/255.255.0.0 and 192.168.2.1/255.255.0.0 are on the same network. The 255 is sort of a true/false in simple terms, but can get pretty complex if you’re trying to keep networks separate. I’m not a subnet guru by any means, but if you Google subnet calculator you can get a pretty good appreciation for its complexity.

What Is An IP Address


IP Address (Internet Protocol Address):

This number is an exclusive number all information technology devices (printers, routers, modems, et al) use which identifies and allows them the ability to communicate with each other on a computer network. There is a standard of communication which is called an Internet Protocol standard (IP). In laymans terms it is the same as your home address. In order for you to receive snail mail at home the sending party must have your correct mailing address (IP address) in your town (network) or you do not receive bills, pizza coupons or your tax refund. The same is true for all equipment on the internet. Without this specific address, information cannot be received. IP addresses may either be assigned permanently for an Email server/Business server or a permanent home resident or temporarily, from a pool of available addresses (first come first serve) from your Internet Service Provider. A permanent number may not be available in all areas and may cost extra so be sure to ask your ISP.
Domain Name System (DNS): This allows the IP address to be translated to words. It is much easier for us to remember a word than a series of numbers. The same is true for email addresses.

For example, it is much easier for you to remember a web address name such as whatismyip.com than it is to remember 192.168.1.1 or in the case of email it is much easier to remember email@somedomain.com than email@192.168.1.1
Dynamic IP Address: An IP address that is not static and could change at any time. This IP address is issued to you from a pool of IP addresses allocated by your ISP or DHCP Server. This is for a large number of customers that do not require the same IP Address all the time for a variety of reasons. Your computer will automatically get this number as it logs on to the network and saves you the trouble of having to know details regarding the specific network configurations. This number can be assigned to anyone using a dial-up connection, Wireless and High Speed Internet connections. If you need to run your own email server or web server, it would be best to have a static IP.
Static IP Address: An IP address that is fixed and never changes. This is in contrast to a dynamic IP address which may change at any time. Most ISP's a single static IP or a block of static IP's for a few extra bucks a month.
IP version 4: Currently used by most network devices. However, with more and more computers accessing the internet, IPv4 addresses are running out quickly. Just like in a city, addresses have to be created for new neighborhoods but, if your neighborhood gets too large, you will have to come up with an entire new pool of addresses. IPv4 is limited to 4,294,967,296 addresses.
IP version 5: This is an experimental protocol for UNIX based systems. In keeping with standard UNIX (a computer Operating System) release conventions, all odd-numbered versions are considered experimental. It was never intended to be used by the general public.
IP version 6: The replacement for the aging IPv4. The estimated number of unique addresses for IPv6 is 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 or 2^128.

What is a Proxy?


Proxy Server

A proxy or proxy server is basically another computer which serves as a hub through which internet requests are processed. By connecting through one of these servers, your computer sends your requests to the proxy server which then processes your request and returns what you were wanting. In this way it serves as an intermediary between your home machine and the rest of the computers on the internet. Proxies are used for a number of reasons such as to filter web content, to go around restrictions such as parental blocks, to screen downloads and uploads and to provide anonymity when surfing the internet.

Why use a Proxy?

If you are wanting to surf the web anonymously then proxies can provide you with a means to hide your home IP address from the rest of the world. By connecting to the internet through proxies, the home IP address of your machine will not be shown but rather the IP of the proxy server will be shown. This can provide you with more privacy then if you were simply connecting directly to the internet. There are number of proxies that can provide you with service. You can find a list of these simply by typing "Proxy List" into any search engine. There are some proxies which are free and some which charge money, the choice is up to you but we have found that the paid proxies are more reliable, faster and more secure.

How to Setup a Proxy

Most internet browsers can be setup to run through proxies in just a matter of minutes.

Internet Explorer Proxy Settings:

  • Click Tools
  • Click Internet Options
  • Click the Connections Tab
  • Click LAN settings
  • Check the "Use a proxy server for your LAN" box
  • Enter the IP Address of the Proxy Server and the Port Number
  • Click OK

FireFox Proxy Settings:

  • Click the FireFox Button(The button in the upper left corner)

What is an email header?

Each email you receive comes with headers. The headers contain information about the routing of the message and the originating Internet Protocol address of the message. Not all electronic messeges you receive will allow you to track them back to the originating point and depending on how you send messages determines whether or not they cantrace an email address back to you. The headers don't contain any personal information. At most, the results of the trace with show you the origination IP and the computer name that sent the email. After viewing the trace information, the initiating IP can be looked up to determine from where the message was sent. IP address location information DOES NOT contain your street name, house number, or phone number. The trace will most likely determine the city and the ISP the sender used.

How do I get the header to start the trace email process?

Each electronic messaging program will vary as to how you get to the message options. I'll cover the basics to start the trace...the rest is up to you.
  • Outlook - Right click the message while it's in the inbox and choose Message Options. A window will open with the headers in the bottom of the window.
  • Windows Live - Right click the correspondence while it's in the inbox, choose Properties, then click the Details tab.
  • GMail - Open the correspondence. In the upper right corner of the email you'll see the word Reply with a little down arrow to the right. Click the down arrow and choose Show Original.
  • Hotmail - Right click the memo and choose View Message Source.
  • Yahoo! - Right click the note and choose View Full Headers.
  • AOL - Click Action and then View Message Source.
You can see that no matter the program, the headers are usually just a right click away.

I've got the header, now how do I start the trace?

The next step to trace an email address is to find the first IP listed in the header. This is most likely the IP initiating point. However, there are exceptions to this. You'll have to look at the information logically to deduce the originating IP.

Can you trace any email address?

Yes and No. For example, someone who sends a message to your hotmail account shows in the X-Originating IP section of the headers. However, someone who sends you a message from GMail will ONLY trace back to Google IP addresses.

How To Change Your IP Address


How do I change my IP Address?

There are MANY methods to change your IP address. Some methods will work for you but may not work for someone else and vice versa. We're going to cover how to change your IP address in Windows 2000, XP, 2003, and Vista using command prompt.

What if I have a static IP address?

If your IP is static, then you CAN’T change it without contacting your ISP. Although not impossible, it is very rare that an ISP would assign you a static IP without some sort of increased level of service like a business account. However, an ISP can set a lengthy lease time for your IP address and make it look like you've assigned a static IP. If you have a long lease time (explained in this article) on your IP then you may not be able to change your IP address without leaving your modem or router unplugged for a long period of time (more than 8 hours), or without cloning your MAC address, which I’ll explain later in this article.
It definitely helps if you know how the IP is being assigned to you.

What is an IP address lease time?

An IP lease time is the amount of time your ISP determines you’ll be assigned a particular IP. Some IP lease times could be just a couple of hours, where some are set to a few days, and other IP lease times could be set for as long as a year or more. This setting is completely up to your ISP.
One of the easier methods to change your IP address is to turn off your modem/router/computer overnight. Then turn it back on the following morning. This method WILL NOT work if your ISP has a long lease time set for your IP.
The following method will ONLY work if your computer is being assigned your external IP and not a router.
If your connection is direct to your computer and your computer gets the public IP and not a router, you can try this:
For Windows 2000, XP, and 2003
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type in cmd and hit ok (this opens a Command Prompt)
4. Type ipconfig /release and hit enter
5. Click Start, Control Panel, and open Network Connections
6. Find and Right click on the active Local Area Connection and choose Properties
7. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
8. Click on Use the following IP address
9. Enter a false IP like 123.123.123.123
10. Press Tab and the Subnet Mask section will populate with default numbers
11. Hit OK twice
12. Right click the active Local Area Connection again and choose Properties
13. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
14. Choose Obtain an IP address automatically
15. Hit OK twice
16. Go to What Is My IP to see if you have a new IP address

For Vista (Windows 7 is very similar)
1. Click Start
2. Click All Programs expand the Accessories menu
3. In the Accessories menu, Right Click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator
4. Type ipconfig /release and hit enter
5. Click Start, Control Panel, and open Network and Sharing Center. Depending on your view, you may have to click Network and Internet      before you see the Network and Sharing Center icon
6. From the Tasks menu on the left, choose Manage Network Connections
7. Find and Right click on the active Local Area Connection and choose Properties (If you’re hit with a UAC prompt, choose Continue)
8. Double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
9. Click on Use the following IP address
10. Enter a false IP like 123.123.123.123
11. Press Tab and the Subnet Mask section will populate with default numbers
12. Hit OK twice
13. Right click the active Local Area Connection again and choose Properties
14. Double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
15. Choose Obtain an IP address automatically
16. Hit OK twice
17. Go to What Is My IP to see if you have a new IP address
Some people have inquired about manually assigning their IP address. This IS possible, but you run a very high risk of your ISP banning you from connecting to the internet. To manually change your IP, follow the steps above for your Operating System. In step 9 or 10, depending on your O/S, enter an IP similar to the one displayed in the command prompt window. For example, if the IP displayed in the command prompt window is 75.1.2.3, change yours to 75.1.2.4. You’ll also need to manually enter the Subnet, Gateway and DNS Server IP addresses. If the new IP you give your computer doesn’t work, chances are someone else on the ISP network has already been assigned that IP. You’ll need to move on to the next one and keep trying until you find an open one. Keep in mind that some ISPs match up your MAC or modem data to the address that’s been assigned. If those 2 things don’t match up, you won’t be able to connect no matter what. If your router gets the IP and not your computer, you’ll need to http in to your routers interface and manually assign the IP there. It’s pretty much the same method as assigning the IP to your computer. The method that varies is in how you reach your routers interface. You can get the instructions from your manufacturer’s website.
MAC Cloning. What is a MAC address? A MAC address is a physical hardware address assigned to each device that has the capability of connecting to a network. The internet is nothing more than a large network. The MAC address is something that is assigned in the chip on the device and is not something the user can change. MAC cloning can only be done at your router providing it has those capabilities. Most ISPs assign their IPs based on the MAC address in your equipment. If the MAC address of your router is 00-11-22-33-44-55 and you connect to your ISP, the DHCP server records your MAC and assigns an IP. If you disconnect from the ISP, you lose your IP address. The next time you connect, the DHCP server sees your MAC, looks to see if it has assigned an IP address to you before. If it has and the lease time has not expired, it will most likely give you the same IP address you had before disconnecting and will not change your IP.
